Mastery Assignments for Lesson 5.3

The Bridge Test: Find 5 examples of Munfasil in Surah Al-Baqarah (look for $\text{بِمَا أُنْزِلَ}$ or $\text{قَالُوا آمَنَّا}$). Recite them while holding 4 counts. Then, practice stopping on the first word and ensure your voice drops to exactly 2 counts. The Dagger Alif Hunt: Scan Surah Al-Imran for the word $\text{يَا أَيُّهَا}$. Identify the “Small Alif” and practice the 4-count stretch as if the Alif were written out fully. The Mizan Challenge: Recite Surah Al-Kafirun. It is filled with Munfasil rules ($\text{لَا أَعْبُدُ}$, $\text{مَا تَعْبُدُونَ}$, etc.). Record yourself and use a timer to ensure every single “Laa” is the exact same duration. Grammatical Separation: For every “Madd Wave” you find, ask yourself: “Does this word end here?” If the Hamza starts the next word, label it as Munfasil. The Breath Transition: Practice $\text{إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ}$. Focus on keeping the “N” of Inna perfectly steady through the 4-count stretch until the moment you hit the “A” of A’taynaaka.

Mastery Assignments for Lesson 5.2

The 4-Finger Pulse: Find 10 instances of the “Madd Wave” in Surah An-Naba. Practice each word by opening 4 fingers, one by one, to ensure you are hitting the 4-count target exactly. The Same-Word Audit: Compare the word $\text{جَاءَ}$ (Muttasil) with the phrase $\text{مَا أَغْنَىٰ}$ (from Surah Al-Masad). Identify why $\text{جَاءَ}$ is “Connected” (one word) and the other is not. This prepares you for the next lesson. The Stop-Test (6 Counts): Practice stopping on the word $\text{السَّمَآء}$. Record yourself stretching the Alif for 6 full counts. Now, practice reading it in the middle of a sentence (As-Samaaa-’i…) for 4 counts. Note the physical change in breath control. The Glottal Stop Accuracy: Recite $\text{سِيٓءَتْ}$ ten times. Focus on ensuring the ‘Ya’ is a flat, 4-count line followed by a sharp “click” for the Hamza. Visual Hunting: Scan Juz ‘Amma and circle every thick Madd wave that is followed by a Hamza in the same word. Count how many you find in Surah Al-Bayyinah.

Mastery Assignments for Lesson 5.1

The Manual Metronome: Open Surah Al-Fatiha. For every Natural Madd (e.g., Maaliki, Siraat, Al-lathiina), use your index finger to count exactly two beats. Do this 10 times until your voice and finger are perfectly synchronized. The Meaning-Shift Drill: Practice reciting the pair $\text{خَلَقَ}$ (Khalaqa – He created) and $\text{خَالَقَ}$ (Khaa-laqa – He interacted). Record yourself on your phone. If the two words sound the same, your “math” is failing; the second word must be exactly twice as long on the first syllable. The ‘Jawf’ Resonance Test: Recite the word $\text{نُوحِيهَا}$ (Nu-hee-ha). This word is famous in Tajweed because it contains all three Madd letters in one word. While reciting, ensure your tongue does not touch the roof of your mouth once during the three stretches. The Tanween Stop (Iwad): Find 5 words in Juz ‘Amma ending in Fatha-tayn. Practice stopping on them to produce a clear, 2-count Alif stretch. The Breath Economy Exercise: Recite a long verse (like Ayatul Kursi) and identify only the Natural Madds. Try to recite the verse ensuring that every 2-count stretch is identical in length, maintaining a perfect “balance of the scale” (Mizan).

Mastery Assignments for Lesson 5.4

The “Paper Test”: Hold a small strip of paper in front of your mouth. Recite $\text{مِنْكُمْ}$ (Minkum) using Ikhfa. Because the sound should be through the nose, the paper should barely move. If it flutters, you are letting too much air out of your mouth. The Heavy/Light Contrast Drill: Recite $\text{مِن قَبْلِ}$ (Heavy) and $\text{مِن كَانَ}$ (Light) back-to-back ten times. Focus on raising the back of your tongue for the first and keeping it flat for the second. The Hovering Mirror: Use a mirror and a flashlight. Watch your tongue as you say $\text{أَنْتُمْ}$. Ensure the tip of the tongue is “pointing” toward your upper teeth but is not touching them. Surah Analysis: Open Surah Al-Falaq. Find the phrase $\text{مِن شَرِّ}$. Is the ‘Sheen’ a heavy or light letter? Practice the Ikhfa accordingly for two counts. Ghunnah Consistency: Record yourself reciting the first five verses of Surah Al-Muzzammil. Identify every Ikhfa and check if your timing is consistently two counts for each.

Mastery Assignments for Lesson 5.3

The “Silent Tongue” Test: Place your index finger between your teeth (without biting). Attempt to recite the word $\text{أَنۢبِئْهُم}$. Because Iqlab is a lip rule, your tongue should not move to touch your finger. If it does, you are still trying to pronounce the ‘N’. The 2-Count Metronome: Recite five instances of Iqlab from Surah Al-Baqarah. Use a metronome set to 60 BPM. Ensure the nasal “hum” lasts exactly for two clicks of the metronome. The “Feather Touch” Exercise: Practice closing your lips so softly that you can still feel the air vibrating behind them. Do this with the phrase $\text{مِنۢ بَعْدِ}$ ten times until the sound feels “airy” and resonant rather than “tight.” Tanween Script Audit: Open your Mushaf to Surah Al-Humazah. Identify the Tanween in the first three verses. Find the Iqlab and notice how the Damma-tayn or Fatha-tayn is altered to include the tiny Meem. Recording & Critique: Record yourself reciting the phrase $\text{بَصِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ}$. Listen back: Can you hear a clear ‘M’ transition? Is it held long enough? Does it sound “natural” or forced?

Mastery Assignments for Lesson 5.2

The “Yanmu” Timing Drill: Practice $\text{مِن وَالٍ}$ and $\text{مَن يَقُولُ}$. Use a metronome. Hold the “hum” in your nose for exactly two beats before finishing the word. The Nose-Pinch Test: While saying $\text{مِن رَّبِّهِمْ}$ (Bila-Ghunnah), pinch your nose. The sound should not change at all. If it does, you are accidentally adding Ghunnah. Staggered Tanween Hunt: Open Surah Al-Zalzalah. Find every staggered Tanween. Determine if it is Bi-Ghunnah or Bila-Ghunnah based on the following letter. The 4-Word Exception Recitation: Recite the word “Dunya” ten times. Notice how your tongue must touch the roof of the mouth for the ‘N’. This is “Absolute Clarity” (Ith-har Mutlaq). The “Shaddah” Transition: Practice $\text{مِن لَّدُنْهُ}$. Focus on the “strength” of the Lam. It should feel like the ‘N’ was never there, and you are just saying a very strong ‘L’.

Mastery Assignments for Lesson 5.1

The “Bridge” Drill: Practice the transition $\text{أَنْ-أَ, أَنْ-هَ, أَنْ-عَ, أَنْ-حَ, أَنْ-غَ, أَنْ-خَ}$. Focus on making the ‘N’ clear but instantly connecting it to the throat sound without a gap. The Sukoon Audit: Scan Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Al-Ikhlas. Circle every Noon that has a visible Sukoon on it. Verify which throat letter follows it. The Tissue Test (Negative): Hold a tissue to your nose. When saying the ‘N’ in $\text{مِنْ عِلْمٍ}$, the tissue should vibrate slightly, but it should stop the moment you hit the ‘Ayn. The “No-Bounce” Recording: Record yourself saying $\text{أَنْعَمْتَ}$. Play it back in slow motion. Do you hear “An-a-amta”? If so, your tongue is bouncing. Practice holding the tongue against the gums until the ‘Ayn begins. Throat Mapping: Recite the six throat letters while placing your hand on your throat. Identify the physical “step-down” from the top (Kha) to the bottom (Hamza).

Mastery Assignments for Lesson 4.7

The Matrix Drill: Pick any 5 words from Surah Al-Fatiha. For every silent letter, write down its “Breath” (Hams/Jahar) and its “Sound” (Shiddah/Rikhwah/Tawassut). Recite them emphasizing these qualities. The “Timing” Metronome: Use a slow metronome (60 BPM). Try to make a Rikhwah letter last 1.5 beats. Make a Tawassut letter last 1 beat. Make a Shiddah letter last 0.5 beats. The Verse Synthesis: Recite Surah Al-Asr ($\text{وَالْعَصْرِ}$). Focus on the word العَصْر. Notice the ‘Lam’ (Moderate), the ‘Saad’ (Flowing + Heavy), and the ‘Ra’ (Moderate). This word is a masterclass in Sukoon transitions. The “Ghost Sukun” Audit: Record yourself reading a long sentence. Listen for any unintended silences between letters that are supposed to be joined. If you hear a gap, your “Pre-loading” needs work. Final Mastery Recitation: Choose a short Surah (like Al-Ikhlas). Focus entirely on the Qalqalah at the end of every verse. Ensure every bounce is sharp, consistent, and neutral in vowel.

Mastery Assignments for Lesson 4.6

The Tissue Challenge: Take a light tissue or a single sheet of toilet paper. Hold it 2 inches from your lips. Recite the ten Hams letters: $\text{فْ, حْ, ثْ, هْ, شْ, خْ, صْ, سْ, كْ, تْ}$. The tissue must flicker for every single one. The Throat Vibration Test: Place two fingers on your Adam’s apple. Say $\text{أَذْ}$ (Jahar) — feel the strong vibration (the buzz). Say $\text{أَسْ}$ (Hams) — feel the buzz stop and change into a “hiss.” The Kaf/Ta Pressure Drill: Practice saying “Ak” and “At.” Focus on the “Stop-then-Puff” sequence. The puff should be so light it can only be heard by someone standing right next to you. The Mnemonic Memorization: Memorize the phrase فَحَثَّهُ شَخْصٌ سَكَتْ. This is the fourth and final major mnemonic group for your foundational Tajweed training. The “Ha” Sustain: The letter $\text{هـ}$ (Ha) is the deepest Hams letter. Practice saying $\text{أَهْ}$ and see how long you can let the breath flow from the bottom of your throat without making any “voice” or “buzz.”

Mastery Assignments for Lesson 4.5

The “L/N/M” Continuity Drill: Recite $\text{أَلْ, أَنْ, أَمْ}$. Focus on the “Hold.” Ensure that the sound doesn’t cut off like a thud, but also doesn’t trail off. It should be a firm, moderate vibration. The ‘Ayn Pressure Test: Practice the word $\text{يَعْلَمُونَ}$. Focus on the ‘Ayn. Try to hold the squeeze in your throat for two seconds during practice to find the Makhraj, then reduce it to the proper “Moderate” timing during recitation. The Duration Comparison: * Say $\text{أَسْ}$ (Long/Flow). Say $\text{أَلْ}$ (Medium/Moderate). Say $\text{أَتْ}$ (Short/Tight). Record and compare the lengths. The ‘L’ must be exactly in the middle. The Mnemonic Recall: Memorize the phrase لِنْ عُمَرَ. This is the third of the three great mnemonic groups (the others being Ajid Qatin Bakat and Qutb Jadin). The Ghunnah Check: When saying $\text{أَنْ}$ and $\text{أَمْ}$, place your fingers on your nose. You should feel a moderate vibration. This vibration is what makes these letters “Moderate” rather than “Tight.”
