Five Mastery Assignments

The “One-Finger” Vertical Check: Recite the first 10 letters of the alphabet with a Fathah while holding your index finger vertically between your teeth. If your teeth hit your finger, your jaw drop is insufficient. If there is a gap, your opening is clear. The “Heavy vs. Light” Audio Log: Record yourself saying تَ (Ta – Light) then طَ (Taw – Heavy). Listen for the “æ” sound in the first and the “aw” sound in the second. Repeat this for all 7 heavy letters. The Metronome Timing Drill: Set a metronome to 60 BPM. Recite بَ – تَ – ثَ – جَ with each letter landing exactly on a beat. Ensure the sound stops before the next beat hits to avoid “stretching” (elongation). Visual Hunting: Open a page of the Quran. Circle 10 Fathahs that sit on “Light” letters and 5 Fathahs that sit on “Heavy” letters. Note the “Ra” (رَ) specifically as a heavy case. The “Anti-Imalah” Mirror Test: Recite بَ (Ba) while looking at your tongue in a mirror. If you see the middle of your tongue rising, you are likely slanting the sound toward “Beh.” Keep the tongue flat like a floor.

Assignments for Lesson 2.7

Tooth Counting: Scan a line of text. Find every $Seen$. Count the three teeth for each one to ensure you aren’t skipping any. The Oval-Bump Drill: Practice drawing the $Sad$ oval and immediately adding the small vertical bump. The Seat-Breaker: Write the word $مُؤْمِن$ (Mumin). Cross out the $Waw$ with a pencil to remind yourself that only the $Hamza$ is pronounced.

Assignments for Lesson 2.6

The Figure-8 Challenge: Practice drawing the Medial $He$ ($ـهـ$) in one continuous motion without lifting your pen. The Meem Position: Write a string of letters and place the $Meem$ loop below the line. The Four-Face Chart: Draw all four forms of $He$ in a large format and label them.

Assignments for Lesson 2.5

The Connection Test: Write the letter $Meem$ followed by a stick. If you join them, name it ($Lam$). If you leave a gap, name it ($Alif$). The Kaf Sash: Practice drawing the “Diagonal Sash” of the $Kaf$ 15 times. Ensure the slant is distinct so it isn’t confused with a $Dal$. Ligature Hunt: Search a page of text for the “X” shape of the $Lam-Alif$. Every time you find it, trace it with your finger.

Assignments for Lesson 2.4

The Wave Drill: Draw the “Wave” skeleton 20 times. On 5 of them, place a dot above ($Kha$); on 5, place a dot below ($Jeem$); and leave 10 empty ($Ha$). The Metamorphosis Sketch: Draw the four stages of $Ayn$ ($ع, عـ, ـعـ, ـع$). Use a highlighter to mark the “Medial Triangle” to train your eyes to spot it. Quranic Scan: Find the word “Al-Alameen” ($الْعَالَمِينَ$). Identify the $Ayn$. Is it initial, medial, or final? (Answer: It is Initial, so it looks like the open “c”). Find the word “Ya’lamu” ($يَعْلَمُ$). Identify the $Ayn$. (Answer: It is Medial, so it is a triangle).

Assignments for Lesson 2.3

The Dot-Tooth Matrix: Draw 5 large “teeth” on a page. Under the first, write “Ba” and add the dot. Under the second, write “Noon” and add the dot. Continue for all five. Repeat this 10 times. The “Saw Blade” Construction: Create an imaginary word using all 5 tooth letters in a row: $ثـبـتـنـي$. Write it out and then label each “tooth” with the correct letter name. Nuqat Accuracy Test: Find a word in the Quran that has a “tooth” with two dots above ($Ta$). Now find one with two dots below ($Ya$). Compare them side-by-side. Notice how the only difference is the “altitude” of the dots.

Assignments for Lesson 2.2

The Handshake Protocol: Write the letter $Ba$ ($ب$). Now write $Dal$ ($د$) next to it. Join them to form $بـد$. Now, reverse the order and write $د$ then $ب$. Notice how they remain separate ($د ب$). Explain in writing why the second version cannot be joined. The Line-Level Drill: Draw a horizontal line across a page. Write 20 pairs of $ـد$ and $ـر$. Make sure the $Dal$ sits on the line and the $Ra$ falls below it. This builds “muscle memory” for your eyes. Gap Mapping: Find the word “Daud” (David) in Arabic: $دَاوُد$. Count the gaps. Why are there so many gaps in such a short word? (Answer: $Dal$, $Alif$, and $Waw$ are all non-connectors).

Assignments for Lesson 2.1

The Anatomy Chart: Draw a large letter $س$ (Seen). Use a red pen to circle the “Head” (the three teeth) and a blue pen to circle the “Tail” (the bowl). Now, draw the Initial form and notice that only the red circle remains. The 4-State Matrix: Select the letters $ك$ (Kaf), $ع$ (Ayn), and $م$ (Meem). Create a grid. Write each letter in its Independent, Initial, Medial, and Final forms. Underneath each, write one sentence describing how the shape changed (e.g., “The Meem lost its tail and became a small loop on the line”). The Scribe’s Observation: Open any page of a printed Quran. Find 10 instances of the letter $Lam$ ($ل$). Categorize each one: Is it Initial, Medial, or Final? How did you know? (Hint: Look for the connection arms).
